2019 Laborshed Study to be Conducted

Posted on August 13, 2019 at 8:00 AM by Brenda Dryer

The Ames Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Commission is partnering with Iowa Workforce Development and Iowa Economic Development Authority to complete a Laborshed employment study for the Story County area.  This study will geographically define which communities contribute to our workforce, regardless of political boundaries. This defined area is called a Laborshed area and is based upon commuting patterns.

The purpose of this Laborshed study is to measure the availability and characteristics of our area workers. Laborshed studies are useful tools for economic development teams and existing or prospective employers to understand the local labor market, make informed expansion and site selection decisions, and maintain/recruit a high-quality workforce.

In the next two weeks letters will go out to employers in the Ames area asking that they provide aggregate counts of their employees’ residential ZIP codes. This will provide key information in determining what the scope and scale of the Ames’ Laborshed area is and better understand where our workforce resides.

If you have questions please reach out to Brenda Dryer who directs our workforce efforts at brenda@ameschamber.com.

Hello. Ames Assessor is located in Ames City Hall, but we are governed by Ames Conference Board and are technically not employees of City of Ames. While our staff is small, I don't want to be missed in this study. Please include us in your study. Thank you.
